More than a decade past the “tipping point” announced byձѷmagazine in 2014, transgender visibility across the English-language mediascape is still on the rise, withmore and morefilms and television shows featuring transgender characters, performers, and narratives. This talk provides an introductory overview of the history of transgender media representation from early twentieth-century cinema to contemporary productions, challenging the common misconception according to which the mediation of non-conforming gender identities constitutes a recent phenomenon, and proposing instead new ways to think about the trans audiovisual image through time.

Tristan Venturi is a PhD candidate in Visual, Performative, and Media Arts at the University of Bologna, where he is conducting research into the representation of gender identity in Italian film. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Minors in Psychology and Creative Writing and a Master of Arts in Film Studies. His main research interests fall at the intersection of gender studies – particularly queer theory and transgender studies – and film and media studies.
